City customers reminded to use online options, switch to eBilling

14 January 2021

City of Cape Town customers are reminded to use online options to pay their municipal accounts and to make the switch to eBilling. Due to the resurgence of COVID-19 please consider our alternative convenient payment options rather than visiting an office. More than 300 000 customers are now receiving their monthly invoices from the City via email. Read more below:

Using online payment options or eBilling has many benefits for City customers. It is hoped that the number of customers using eBilling services will increase rapidly over the next few years as it holds an environmental benefit and ensures that the delivery of invoices is not disrupted by events outside of the City's control. An increased number of residents chose this option at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic when the South African Post Office was not allowed to operate under Alert Level 5 regulations.

Some 30% of City invoices are now sent out to customers via email. Providing an electronic billing service and online payment options is one of the key measures instituted by the City to keep the municipality financially healthy enough to continue providing basic services, especially important during this time.

‘The City’s drive to go paperless holds numerous benefits for our customers, for the environment and for the City itself.

‘We are encouraged to see the recent growth in eBilling customers and hope this number will continue to increase. We know that our account holders expect an efficient, technologically advanced and cost-effective administration. We believe that there are many more account holders who have email addresses who could benefit from this convenient offering. We encourage more of our customers to register for eBilling.

‘Our large billing system has a 99% accuracy rate and with more people opting for paperless billing, the system is enhanced for all customers. Thank you to all our account holders for their continued payments and support, especially during this extraordinary time,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Finance, Alderman Ian Neilson.

Benefits of switching to eBilling include:

  • savings on postage, printing and paper
  • invoices reach customers faster
  • easy filing of invoices by customers
  • better cash flow for the City
  • more direct control over sending and receiving invoices

Customers are encouraged to please register for e-Services and then visit the eBilling registration portal. Please visit www.capetown.gov.za for more information. Customers may follow the instruction wizard and fill in their information. They will need the following:

  • ID or passport number
  • a copy of ID or passport to upload
  • their business partner number (found on the top right hand side of the municipal account)
  • a valid email address

Once they have registered, they will receive their municipal bills via email. Customers may also email help.uces@capetown.gov.za and request to be registered for eBilling.
